Ammonia leak follows meat plant explosion

A meat plant explosion in Anglesey has resulted in two workers being taken to hospital, while ammonia has also leaked from the facility as a result.

The cause of the incident at Welsh Country Foods on the Gaerwen industrial estate is being treated as suspicious by North Wales Police and the North Wales Fire & Rescue Service, reports the Daily Post.

Some 300 people are employed at the meat plant and are expected to return to work today (October 31st) once hazard identification methods have been carried out at the location.

An Environment Agency Wales spokeswoman said: "We were advised that the situation was being contained on site and were satisfied that there was no wider environmental impact."

Local resident Rhian Parry stated that it was "worrying" ammonia leaked following the explosion but added she was "glad" it has been given the all-clear from safety officials.

A chemical explosion at the Reda Industrial Materials warehouse in Dubai Investments Park recently led to the closure of the Greenfield Community School due to emergency procedures, reported UAE newspaper the National.
